Rap Battles, 2007 Edition

This title implies that there even was a 2006 (or 2005) edition, of which I'm not sure, but 50 Cent's highly-publicized declaration that he'd "retire" (oh pleeeeease) if Kanye West's new album Graduation outsold 50's Curtis in their simultaneous first week will reportedly backfire, though not for lack of trying. HITS reports that 50 Cent's album will check in at a very impressive 600,000 copies sold, but unfortunately well short of Kanye's massive 800,000.

First of all, the retirement threat is a bit useless after Jay-Z's hollow retirement pledge (hell, Tupac has been dead for a decade and still drops new singles every once in a while). Additionally, 50 Cent, ever the master of lexicon, said he simply won't put out any solo records as 50 Cent, whateverthatmeans.

More notable in this story is after several dreadful weeks in sales, Kanye's 800,000 sales make it the biggest debut since, well, Kanye West. Late Registration snagged nearly 900,000 in its first week two years ago. In fact, 50 Cent's 600,000 sales would drop it right in the same territory as Maroon 5 and Linkin Park in the top 4 debuts of 2007. Poor Curtis just chose the wrong week.

Kenny Chesney will chart third at over 450,000 sales, making this one of the more active weeks in music this year. What I want to know is, did anyone actually go out and buy the Botch reissue of We Are The Romans? No?

So how about it? Will 50 Cent really retire?

	shydea: 09/12/2007 6:07 PM If anyone's really gonna push 50 out the game it's not gonna be Kanye West. He's not even really a rapper, he's a Pop star that kinda raps. He's a sick producer, we all know that, but not even hardly Rap Royalty. He's acting like a brat and needs to cut that shit out. Rappers aren't supposed to act like that. He's acting like a little girl. But it doesn't matter how many albums he sells to suburban white kids, he'll never be better than 50. He would get eaten alive in a battle of lyrics, fuck record sales. This whole thing is a publicity stunt to sell more records, but 50's still better. Sorry Kanye, you make some ill beats man but I'm standing firm on this one.

I grew up with Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five, Rakim, KRS-One, Special Ed, Wu-Tang, Heltah Skeltah, Boot Camp Clik, The Fugees, stuff like that. I'm sure your generation won't like most of that, but that's what hip hop really is. 50's a better hip hop artist, hands-down. Kanye is definitely better on the Pop tip, but I guess that's what music has turned into now. :o( I'll stick with my old school. Especially 50's underground sh*t. Which was damn, like almost 10 years ago when he got shot up and his album didn't drop. Ok I'll stop cuz you probably have no idea what I'm talking about. And the ONLY song Kanye was on that I'll give him props for is "We are the Champions" with the Dream Team. That was a hot song. But he's different now.

FACT. not so sure that's true of 50 cent, however. additionally, shady will put out any damn thing "curtis jackson" or whatever his real name is wants to put out, because the man moves units.
